The United Left Front (ULF), yesterday, decided to back the New Democratic Front (NDF) candidate Sajith Premadasa contesting the Nov 16 presidential election under the Swan symbol.
Political sources said that 30 members of ULF Central Committee backed the decision whereas 24 opposed it. Two CC members abstained.
Their original decision was to back JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake backed by the National People’s Power (NPP) movement.
In the wake of the ULF changing its stance, its Secretary attorney-at-law Lal Wijenayake quit. Wijenayake was succeeded by Keerthi Kariyawasam, a former Western Provincial Council member representing the Kalutara district. (SF)
