Resigned Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday said that Ministers of the new regime had individually undertaken to monitor the affairs of each and every media institution in a bid to suppress media but the media had a responsibility to act without allowing the country being divided.
“Each Minister is appointed to each newspaper for media control according to the information published recently. That is at the time of presenting 20th Amendment, That is their final decision. The media and we have a responsibility to prevent the country from being divided,” he said.
Mahinda who came to power through the back door unconstitutionally with the help of president Maithiri on the 26th October and ruled Sri Lanka for 7 weeks even after several no confidence was passed in the parliament. Interestingly Rajapaksha and his family members well known for NOT telling the truth said that “Rajapaksas do not come through the back door to power,” he said.
It is reported that Rajapaksas are engaged in racist conflicts in the country. Former Minister Basil Rajapaksa said that if Mahinda did not act as Prime Minister for the last 50 days, the country would be broken into several divisions. The Rajapaksa is said to have been involved in the provocation of communalism after the defeat of the 50-day illegal conspiracy. The parliament or the courts did not accept the post of Mahinda prime minister. Mahinda Rajapaksa was forced to resign from the post yesterday.
Basil, who is considered as anti-communal and anti-religious, has been accused of speaking racistly at the people’s meeting in Homagama. He said that during the period of President Mahinda Rajapaksa was the prime minister.
‘The purported Government’ of Mahinda had spent Rs.840 million on the helicopter rides for the last 21 days without considering the expenses, United national Party (UNP) MP Ravi Karunanayake said in parliament. He said this while presenting the motion to curtail expenditure to the Office of Prime Minister. “We have the legitimate authority to cease these types of alleged expenses and thus we are not hesitant to take such actions,” he added.
