Ranil Wickremesinghe who maintains that that he is the legitimate Prime Minister, told a United National Front ( UNF) rally in Colombo yesterday, that a minority government could exist, only if there was no opposition to it.
He said that President Maithripala Sirisena had tried to justify the appointment of Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister on October 26,though he (Ranil) was the legitimate Prime Minister, by referring to the situation that existed on January 8, 2015, but that comparison was wrong, since unlike then, the majority of MPs were now opposed to Rajapaksa functioning as the Premier and had demonstrated that twice in Parliament, on Wednesday and yesterday.
Wickremesinghe said that If the President was not willing to accept the ruling by Speaker Karu Jayasuriya that he (Ranil) had a majority in Parliament, a fresh vote could be taken today,to prove it for a third time.
The President’s contention that a minority government could exist, would be correct only if the there was no opposition to it,he pointed out.
Wickremesinghe said that the UNP and the other parties that comprised the UNF, were not scared of polls and were even prepared to hold the presidential and general elections simultaneously, but for that to happen,Parliament had to be dissolved in terms of the Constitution and not according to any one’s whims and fancies or likes and dislikes.
Polls could be held according to the law, only after the president restores the status quo that existed prior to October 26, Wickremesinghe noted adding “If not the winning party would be confronted with legal issues, which could be challenged in a court of law.”
