He gave the ruling after a no-confidence motion on Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa was taken for a vote when Parliament began sessions today.
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) had handed over a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa today, JVP MP Vijitha Herath said. Speaking to the media after the Party leaders’ meeting, he said Prime Minister seat would be allocated for PM Mahinda Rajapaksa when Parliament meets today.
United National Party (UNP) Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa later told reporters that the Government clearly lost the floor test. He said that Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa must now step down as he does not have majority support in Parliament. But Mahinda refuses to give-up his Prime Minister ship and his group wants stay with their New Ministerial posts.
Parliament sittings were adjourned till tomorrow after a tense situation arose in Parliament today. The tense situation arose when the Government refused to accept Speaker Karu Jayasuriya’s ruling to conduct a vote on the no-confidence motion on Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The Speaker conducted the vote despite objections raised by the Mahinda group.
