Just as President Maithripala Sirisena was preparing to take off to the United Nations General Assembly in New York last week, he was told that two prominent political figures had visited him and were waiting to discuss “a serious political matter”.
The two visitors happened to be none other than our very own Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe and Tamil National Alliance’s ‘emerging leader’ M.A. Sumanthiran.
The duo, it was heard, had been there for a decisive discussion on future politics, and the focal point was the next Presidential Election. “You don’t worry and there’s no need to have any fear about the next Presidential Election. The next President will be selected by Parliament and we will make sure that you will be appointed as President by hook or crook,” the duo had promised.
Being the seasoned politician that he is, it did not take him even a few minutes to fathom what the two were up to or where the discussion was heading.
All the same, the President had given an attentive ear to both, PM Wickremesinghe and MP Sumanthiran! Not only had the duo promised to ensure the Presidency to Maithri, but had also promised to vest more executive power, through Parliament, in him. “We will take care of everything,” they echoed in unison.
The talk of the town is, that a handful of UNP lawmakers were going around boasting that the PM and Sumanthiran have successfully given a dead rope to President Maithri.
