GL asks if Sirisena, Wickremesinghe have already created a separate state

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Chairman Prof. G.L Peiris yesterday alleged that a separate state had already been established in the country’s north with the blessings of Sirisena-Wickremesinghe government.

Addressing the Joint Opposition’s weekly media briefing at Borella, former External Affairs Minister Prof. Peiris said that the police deployed in the north received orders from the Tamil National Alliance (TNA). That was why those breaking court orders were not arrested unlike in the south.

Referring to the Presidential Commission appointed to Inquire into the Bond Scam, Prof. Peiris alleged that the commission had not actively questioned the two Ministers Malik Smarawickerme and Kabir Hashim even though it had been thorough in grilling all other witnesses.

Highlighting several loopholes in the commission probing the bond scam, Prof. Peiris said the commission was not summoning the Prime Minister regarding the bond scam and instead he had been given a list of questions and answers were expected by way of an affidavit. He would not be subjected to cross questioning.

Accusing the government of boasting of the freedom of expression that it was able to establish, the former law professor said the main witness in the bond scam had received death threats by a relative o former Minister Ravi Karunanayake.

Prof. Peiris also lashed out at UPFA General Secretary Mahinda Amaraweera for boasting that it was he who had complained about the bond scam first, but he should be aware that the second bond scam was the biggest and it happened as President Maithripala Sirisena had dissolved Parliament, which had prepared a comprehensive report on the first bond scam in 2015. If the first scam had been revealed at that time the second major scam would not have happened, Prof. Peiris said.

When Arjuna Mahendran, the former Central Bank Governor was appointed, PM Wickremesinghe said that he would take the responsibility for Mahendran in his capacity as the CBSL Governor. “But, now what has happened?” Prof. Peiris queried. “Who would take the responsibility for the EPF money lost due to the bond scams and how will the government recover the losses?”
