Regional Development Minister Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka has said he has entered politics and holding a minsterial post for the sole purpose of exposing the wrongs committed by his archenemy, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Addressing a ceremony held at Thamibiligasmulla in Kiribathgoda to establish the UNP’s 13th branch in the Kelaniya electorate on Saturday, the minister said: “I entered politics from a minor party, which could not form a government. We knew that very well. But at the same time I knew it would help me tell the world the crimes committed by Mahinda Rajapaksa. The minor party gave me a platform to create anti-Rajapaksa opinion in the polity.
“The UNP obtained a new lease of life after the Jan. 08, 2015 victory. We expect the new strength would help the UNP to win the forthcoming local government and provincial council elections.
“Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe asked me to contest the Kelaniya electorate in 2010 elections on the UNP ticket. I did not want to contest with thug politicians who were there then. In 2015 the Prime Minister invited me again to contest from the Kurunegala District as Mahinda Rajapaksa was contesting from there. The Kurunegala District has a large number of strong UNP leaders and, therefore, I did not want to contest from that district. Instead, I decided to accept the post of the Kelaniya electorate organiser. My mission is not to enjoy parliament positions or privileges but to expose Mahinda Rajapaksa. I need to go all over the county, telling the people the wrongs committed by the Rajapaksas.”
Former UNP Provincial Council Member U George Perera also spoke.
