Sri Lanka’s anti-UN legislators seek UN help

Sri Lanka’s opposition legislator Namal Rajapaksa turned to the United Nations Human Rights Council soon after he was arrested along with two other members of parliament over their recent anti-India protest. MP Namal Rajapaksa son of Former President Mahinda Rajapaksha, a leading member of the Joint Opposition which is highly critical of the UN Rights Council and who had accused the UN rights body of interfering in Sri Lanka is seeking the help of the same organisation when he is arrested. Namal complained to the UN as well as the US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, about their arrest.

“#SriLanka Police arrested us 4 our peaceful protest against selling national assets, stifling opposition voices. @UNHumanRights @nikkihaley,” Namal said on Twitter as he was remanded in custody till October 16.

Government spokesman and Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne said “When 28 locals were arrested by the Hambantota police Namal did not complain to the UN, but when he himself is arrested he goes crying to the UNHRC,” Senaratne said. He said the Rajapaksa hypocrisy was exposed even earlier when Namal shouted anti-Indian and anti-Chinese slogans last Friday, but later tried to say that their protest was not aimed against any country.

Colombo-based diplomats saw Rajapaksa’s U-turn as an attempt to avoid the wrath of India and China, two key backers who helped His father Mahinda Rajapaksha as president who was the head of the forces which killed more than 40,000 Tamil civilians in May 2009 alone and killed more than 1000 LTTE Leaders and their family members who surrendered with White flag after UN negotiated the surrender. Mahinda and his close associates are accused of War Crime and to avoid being exposed of the crimes they have continuously criticised the UN and have opposed an international judges as they will not be able to bribe them. Sri Lankan Judges are well known for giving verdicts in favour of leading politicians has they will be promoted as a gift by the government.

Interestingly Namal supported his father President Mahinda when protesters were beaten and arrested under his rule, Namal never opposed his father when White Vans used by Mahinda government to kill Tamil Leaders, Journalists and Human rights activists. Rajapaksha’s now in opposition are now complaining to UN that protesting without permission is justifiable.

CPJ research shows that nine journalists have been murdered in Sri Lanka under President Mahinda Rajapaksa rose to power. All of the cases involve journalists critical of the government, and all are unsolved. The bombing, abduction, attacks, and threats of Januaries past have also gone unpunished by authorities. At least 25 other Sri Lankan journalists have been forced to flee their homes in the face of threats. For those critical of Rajapaksa’s government, free expression has had a high, even lethal, price. Namal never reported them to UN.
